Faculty Member, Oriental Languages
Professor, IAS Nantes Fellow, Pays de la Loire Chair
About
My interests include the history of geography and cartography, environmental studies, landscape studies, colonial science, and all things Asian.
I received a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Chicago and went to the University of California at Berkeley for post-doctoral training. I taught Chinese geography at the University of Texas (Austin) and of Oklahoma until 2001. I then took a research position in cartography at ETH Zurich, which I left when the Swedish Collegium offered me a fellowship.
In 2008 I became associate professor at the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Nottingham. I spent most of the 2009-2010 academic year at the Department of Oriental Languages of Stockholm University, which appointed me professor ("affilierad professor") in May 2010.
I am now in residence at the Institute of Advanced Studies of Nantes. I am completing here a book ms on the history of the discovery of climate change and the survey of the deserts of inner Asia.
