Faculty Member, Sociology
About
Mikaela has two major research interests, the first within within the fields of sociology of science and science and technology studies (STS), the second within military sociology.
The research project "Simulated Models and Virtual Worlds: Towards a Sociological Understanding of Simulation Modelling as Scientific Practice", funded by the Swedish Research Council, focuses on the role of numerical models and simulations within astrophysics, oceanography, and meteorology, including climate modelling. The analysis is based on interviews, observations, and documents and explores similarities as well as differences between the cases. Some of the specific areas of interest include:
* how scientists create credibility around uncertain simulations
* how common expectations and standards for results are generated
* how different organizing structures affect development and use of simulation codes
Publications on these topics have appeared in e.g. Social Studies of Science, Science Technology and Human Values and Science Studies.
The second area of interest is empirically related to the field of military sociology, but addresses more general sociological questions such as the lives of members of total institutions, including issues of solidarity and discipline.
