About
The purpose of my PHD project is to investigate the contemporary interplay between EU policy and research in the fields of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. European cooperation has become an important focus over the last decades and there are an increasing number of archaeologists involved in pan-European constellations. Discussions on the “idea of Europe” and a “common heritage” are not new to the field, but few studies have looked into the actual discourses and practices connected to these notions. By combining text based and ethnographically collected sources I aim to explore the roles of Cultural heritage and Archaeology in the EU on one hand, and the outcomes of EU-supported archaeological projects on the other. Thereby I can address both the conceptual and practical possibilities and difficulties of an ‘Archaeology of Europe’. The overall goal is to develop approaches that may become useful tools in practice, both within the political institutions and the research community.
